Stump Grinding in Richmond

A stump grinder turns the stump into chips well below the lawn, so there is nothing left to trip on, mow around or sprout again. We quote the whole job after seeing the stump, show up when we say we will, and rake the yard level when it's done.

Free, no-obligation estimates. Monday to Saturday, 7 am to 6 pm, and every call answered or returned the same working day.

How the grind goes

How a stump grinder takes a stump below grade

The grind runs in a fixed order, whether the stump is a dogwood by the walk or an oak at the back fence, and the order is what keeps the job safe and the yard clean.

  1. Measure the stump

Width is read in inches at ground level across the widest part, surface roots included. That measurement, with the wood and the access, is what the estimate rests on.

  2. Mark the buried lines

Grinding below grade is digging, so the 811 locate marks gas, water and electric lines in the lawn before the machine arrives, and the wheel keeps clear of them.

  3. Cut the stump low

A stump still standing tall gets a fresh chainsaw cut close to the ground, so the wheel starts with less wood and the grind goes faster.

  4. Sweep the wheel side to side

The grinder sits square in front of the stump. Its carbide-toothed wheel is lowered onto the face and swept across it, shaving the wood to chips a few inches at a pass. The wheel throws chips, so windows and nearby walls are shielded and the operator wears protective gear.

  5. Grind below grade

The passes continue until the stump and its root flare are 8 to 12 inches below the surface, deep enough to stop regrowth and let grass take the spot.

  6. Rake the chips back

The chip-and-soil mix goes back into the hole and gets raked level, and the loose debris around it is cleared. Hauling the chips off and filling with topsoil is an option on the estimate.

What we do

Stump grinding services beyond the single stump

Grinding one stump is the job we do most, residential or commercial, and the same machine handles the rest. Each kind of work has its own page, and all of it starts with a free estimate.

  • Level patch of pale wood grindings where a stump was ground out of a front lawn

    Single Stump Grinding

One leftover stump, ground to chips below the lawn and raked level so grass can take the spot. Most front-yard and back-yard stumps are this job.

    Stump removal

Stump removal gets the stump out for good: ground below grade where a lawn goes back, or dug out with the root ball where a new tree or a footing needs the roots gone.

    Richmond stump removal
  • Thick surface roots standing above a shaded lawn around a low cut stump

    Surface root grinding

The roots that run across the lawn and catch the mower are ground down to the stump's depth, so the yard mows flat and grass grows back over them.

  • Tracked stump grinder working down a row of cut stumps along a gravel lot

    Commercial stump grinding

Many or large stumps on a lot, a building site or common ground, quoted by size and count. A home with a row of stumps gets the same grind with the same care.

Who we are

Stump grinding in Richmond

We are García Stump Grinding, and grinding stumps below the ground is the whole of what we do, for houses and businesses across the city and the towns around it.

Every stump gets looked at before it gets a price: its width at the ground, its wood, what stands near it and how the machine will reach it. The quote covers the whole job, and the number does not change once the grinder starts.

Why grind it

Why a leftover stump is worth grinding

A stump that stays in the yard is not finished business; it settles into the grass and makes trouble of its own.

  • Tripping hazardAs it settles and the grass grows over it, it hides from view and catches a foot, a child or a guest.
  • Mower damageA hidden stump or a surface root stops a mower blade cold.
  • Termites and carpenter antsA rotting stump draws termites, carpenter ants and beetles, and from there they move toward the house.
  • Sprouts from the rootsLive roots keep sending up suckers around the stump every season.
  • A hole as it rotsYears on, the wood softens into a hollow and the lawn sinks into it.

What it costs

What sets the price of stump grinding

Stump width is the biggest part of the price, and the rest comes from its wood and age, how the machine reaches it and how many stumps are on the list.

A wide old oak takes more passes than a young dogwood, a stump behind a gate takes more setting up than one beside the drive, and several stumps in one visit cost less each than the same stumps on separate days, because the drive and the setup are paid for once. We put no dollar figure on a stump we have not seen: the estimate is free, and the number on it is the price.

Backyard access

Grinders that fit through a backyard gate

A compact, rubber-tracked grinder passes through a standard 36-inch gate and reaches a stump beside a fence, a patio or a flower bed without a truck ever crossing the lawn.

Rubber tracks spread the machine's weight, so the lawn shows tread marks like a mower's and no ruts. Tell us on the call what stands between the street and the stump, and we plan the route before the day.

Gets through

  • A standard 36-inch gate
  • Beside fences, patios and drives
  • Across the lawn without ruts

Stops the machine

  • A flight of steps
  • A retaining wall
  • A slope steeper than 25 degrees

This is heavy machinery. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration counts tree care among the trades with serious hazards, and a rented grinder in untrained hands is a poor bargain next to a free estimate.

Before and after

The Rest of the Job

The questions that come up once the grinding itself makes sense: the lines, the chips and the estimate.

Virginia 811 marks the buried lines first

Grinding below grade is digging, so the buried lines get marked first.

Virginia 811 marks buried public utility lines for free when asked a few working days ahead, and the marks tell us where the wheel stays shallow or stays away.

call 811 before stump grinding

Chips, the hole and what comes next

The grind leaves a mound of chips mixed with soil where the stump was.

Raked back into the hole, the mix settles over a season and works as mulch. If you'd rather sow grass right away, the chips can be hauled off and the hole filled with topsoil instead.
